Getting a New Smart/Dumb Phone?

Posted by paul on in . with Comments closed |

If you are getting a new cellphone in Canada (from a private sale, craigslist, kijiji, etc) – check the status of it to make sure it is not “blacklisted” due to it being stolen/lost.

The website below has been checked by local police as valid

http://www.protectyourdata.ca/check-the-status-of-your-device-in-canada/

If the EMEI number of a phone shows up on the list, you just saved yourself a lot of money and headaches!

SnapChat Capture

Posted by paul on in . with Comments closed |

Yet another piece on SnapChat – Why? Again this week students asked me “what do you think of SnapChat”.  Parents following me at SNSTIPS know exactly how I feel about it.

Well, a new App has surfaced that will secretly capture the images of those sent by way of SnapChat.  It’s called SNAP SAVE (found here at the APP Store)  So now – even more reason not to send that picture believing it will magically vanish after 3 or 5 or 10 seconds!

BBM – Blackberry Messenger For All!

Posted by paul on in . with Comments closed |

This weekend (Sept 20/21), BBM – Blackberry Messenger is released for Android devices (Sept 20), and iOS – iphone/ipod/ipad devices (Sept 21).

It will quickly become the most popular texting application.  This will take students away from current trending apps like TEXT+ and KIK.

Once it is officially released, I will post an image of what the icon will look like so parents know if it reside on their child’s device.

Grand Theft Auto 5

Yes, Grand Theft Auto V was release SEPT 16, and of children I have spoken to in the last week some have told me it was on their list!

So a quick reminder to parents.

It’s rated M17 – meaning Mature, and for those 17yrs of age or older.

If that does not deter you, then visit the ESRB website to see their review of the game.  At this point, common sense parenting will kick in saying “I don’t want my child exposed to Drugs, Nudity, Violence, Alcohol and Prostitutes” which is what they will see/act out when they play this new version.. take a look at the screen shot below from the game.

Visit ESRB.or HERE to review the game and restrictions

Twerking – Your Child Saw It & You’ve Heard of It

Posted by paul on in . with Comments closed |

Thanks to Miley Cyrus (and MTV), the term “twerking” has made it’s way around the schools and between kids.  If you google “miley cyrus”, you don’t even have to add the term “twerking”, and google gives it to you as the third option!

Parents are outraged at the fact it happened on TV and their child was exposed to it.  Then again, why a 9yr old is watching the MTV music awards given their history of shocking people is a different story..  Side note:  Parents: PVR/Review & Then decide to expose them or not…

According to the Oxford Dictionary Online, to twerk is “to dance to popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and a low, squatting stance.”

And now you know.

Thanks Miley.

Snapchat for Kids – It was only a Matter of Time

Posted by paul on in . with Comments closed |

If you follow my blog – you know how I feel about Snapchat.  Well – they now are targeting children under the age of 13 with SnapKidz.

Not an application that benefits them in the least, and that only seems to draw negative publicity.

To that end – you can find out all about rules and guidelines of snapchat at (a parents guide)
